The African arowana, or Heterotis niloticus, is a freshwater fish found in water sheds in Africa. These fish, also called Nile Leaping Fish, have a streamlined, elongated body with dorsal and anal fins that sit further back on their bodies, enhancing its slender swimming style. They grow up to 18″ while in captivity, and can grow even larger in the wild. While typically peaceful, this arowana can become territorial as they become more mature. In the optimal environment, the African arowana can live for up to 15 years.
If conditions are perfect and the tank is large enough to accomodate, African arowanas make great addition to established systems. Some good tank mates include larger freshwater fish such as large tetras and cichlids, as well as certain species of peaceful catfish. Ensure that your fish are of a similar size.
